Labour without Labour

2026  interactive installation

AI is often portrayed as a symbol of automation and efficiency, yet it depends on vast amounts of human labour, knowledge, and judgment. Labour Without Labour is an interactive installation that reveals the invisible human labour behind automated AI systems.

The installation traces labour as it shifts through AI infrastructures—from physical labour to cognitive labour, and finally to simulation. Participants activate the work by hammering a rock, each strike revealing generative data visualisations based on research into the global infrastructures behind AI. Through this physical interaction, the work exposes the hidden labour and colonial legacies embedded within seemingly autonomous technologies.
